Guide – Configuring Exchange Active Sync on Android HTC devices Hero

I decided this morning to test Exchange ActiveSync connection on my HTC Hero. I went through the account setup and authenticated with the server successfully, you specify the data I wanted to sync, and then when it came to finalizing the configuration, failed with the following error:

“Error
Error creating account. Please try again later. ”

Great. Well, finally authenticated it, so what’s the problem? A little more digging and discovered that this was reduced to a security setting I use on my Exchange server that requires ActiveSync mobile users to enter a PIN on your phone to add an additional layer of security on the phone . HTC seems that the hero can not deal with returning the encrypted password. So if you use SSL with its web facing Exchange server, you will not be able to connect without either turning off the mobile users’ requirement of password policy, or, I suppose, through a web certificate certificate . Neither SSL off or disconnect the password policy is a particularly good idea, and I dare say that if you ask your IT department to do is laugh out of his office (I know), so the best option would be to ask the IT managers who have a site license. In order to cover all the options in this guide however, I will detail the method of excluding specific users password policies,

* Open Exchange System
* Expand Global Settings, and then right click on the mobile and select Properties
* Click on the button safety device
* The “Enforce password on device” check box is the culprit here, but it is better to deactivate it for a specific user rather than the entire domain, so you press the Exceptions button
* Click Add and select the user you wish to add to the list of exceptions
* Click OK three times to return to the Exchange system and is already

OK, now that that is out of the way, the following guide details the method for setting up Exchange ActiveSync on Android. Based on my HTC Hero, but should be a similar process for other Android devices.

* Tap the Mail icon and then tap “Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync
* Enter your email address in the field above and Active Directory password in the second field
* Click “Manual Setup”
* Enter the full gateway Exchange server URL (or IP address) to address the “server” field (eg mail.yourdomain.com)
* Enter your Active Directory domain, you may have to use the domain name (eg yourdomain.local). Your domain administrator will be able to provide these details
* Enter your Active Directory user and password in the boxes
* If your domain uses SSL (again, your domain administrators will be able to tell you), be sure to check the “This server requires an encrypted SSL connection”
* Click Next and the phone says “Verifying account information …”
* If the connection succeeds, you are prompted to specify what you want to sync Mail, Contacts and Calendar. If unsuccessful, probably have entered incorrect information, go back and re-enter everything. If it still fails, contact your IT department
Finish * Hit the installation program and the phone should start to synchronize your email

Fortunately, the SSL exchange issue is fixed in future updates, but do not hold your breath on that.
