Allow the iPhone to access your Exchange mailbox

With the launch of the iPhone 3G and version 2.0 software, the iPhone has the ability to access their email, contacts and calendar stored on the server of your Exchange organization. This article describes the steps necessary to access your mailbox from your iPhone.

Checklist

Version is Exchange Server 2003 with Service Pack 2 or Exchange 2007
A valid digital certificate is installed on the Exchange environment
iPhone is running version 2.0 or later firmware

Preparing the Exchange Server environment

The ActiveSync protocol used for communication between the iPhone and the Exchange server must be enabled and configured on the server. A digital certificate is required at the server for secure communications with the iPhone. If an ISA server is in use, must be configured to allow traffic of ActiveSync for the Exchange environment. The quickest way to verify that your server is configured properly is to use a testing tool to identify any problems ActiveSync configuration.

How to configure your firewall

The Exchange server and the network is protected from the Internet by a firewall must be configured to allow the iPhone to connect over the Internet to Exchange. To do this you must allow Internet on port 443 (the port used for SSL) on the firewall and configure the firewall to forward all Internet traffic on port 443 to the Exchange environment.

Setting up your iPhone

In your iPhone, select Microsoft Exchange in the list of email services. The next screen on the iPhone will ask for your email address and a user name and password. This user name and password is the same as that used for logging in to your office PC. The iPhone will attempt to auto-discover your server and most likely is a mistake and ask your server name. For the server name, type the name of your Internet firewall (for example, firewall.example.com) the name of your Exchange server. The next screen lets you select what to synchronize (email, calendar and contacts) and the number of days to keep email on the iPhone. When you have completed these settings, press the sync button to start recovering your mailbox.

If you encounter problems

A wide variety of technical issues may prevent the iPhone from connecting properly. To avoid the technical complexities that you should consider using a hosting service for integrating the iPhone. Using a hosted service eliminates the problems with the certificates and the opening of a firewall and makes it much easier for nontechnical people to integrate your iPhone with Exchange.
